In a game that had everything — lead changes, late-inning drama, and a walk-off finish — the St. Ignatius Wildcats outlasted the Aragon Varsity Dons 5-4 Wednesday afternoon at Fairmont Field.
With the score knotted at four in the bottom of the seventh, Gianna Galarza sparked the rally with a single down the left field line. That set the stage for Olivia Dollard, who delivered a clutch double to center field that plated the winning run and sent the Wildcats home with an unforgettable victory.
It was fitting that Dollard had the final word. The right-handed pitcher had been battling all afternoon on the mound, going the full seven innings and surrendering nine hits and four runs — two earned — while striking out seven and walking three. She also finished as one of the game's most productive hitters, driving in two runs and going deep in the lineup when it mattered most.
Aragon drew first blood, finally breaking through in the top of the fifth inning. A single down the right field line to get things going, followed with a fielder's choice grounder that pushed two runs across, giving the Dons a 2-0 lead.
But St. Ignatius wasn't done. The Wildcats rallied in the bottom of the sixth, with Annie Stecher and Dollard each lacing doubles to take a 3-2 lead.
Aragon refused to go quietly. In the top of the seventh, the Dons capitalized on a St. Ignatius error to reclaim the lead, 4-3, and appeared poised to escape with a road win.
Then came the bottom of the seventh.
Galarza set the table with her single — the third of her four at-bats on the day — and Dollard did the rest, lining a walk-off double to complete the comeback.
Stecher also drove in two runs for the Wildcats in a balanced offensive effort.
The Wildcats will look to carry the momentum forward when they welcome Burlingame on Friday for their next home contest.
