SAN FRANCISCO — DJ Delaney put on a hitting clinic Tuesday afternoon, going a perfect 3-for-3 with a triple, double and single to lead the St. Ignatius College Preparatory Wildcats to a convincing 11-1 victory over the Saint Francis Lancers.
The Wildcats' offensive juggernaut was firing on all cylinders, amassing an impressive 13 hits while displaying remarkable discipline at the plate with eight walks drawn throughout the contest.
St. Ignatius wasted no time establishing control, jumping ahead with two runs in the opening frame after Beau Schaffer grounded into a double play and Saint Francis committed a costly error that allowed another run to cross the plate.
The game remained within reach until the Wildcats' offense exploded in the fifth inning. The visiting team sent nine batters to the plate, scoring five runs on four hits in a devastating sequence that effectively put the game out of reach. Delaney's clutch single drove in two runs, while Tycco Giometti and AJ Wineinger each added run-scoring doubles. Schaffer contributed a sacrifice fly to complete the barrage.
On the mound, southpaw Chase Gordon was masterful, scattering just four hits and surrendering a single run over six dominant innings. Gordon displayed impeccable command throughout, never issuing a walk while recording one strikeout. Charlie Stecher closed the door with a stellar relief appearance, striking out three of the four batters he faced in a hitless seventh inning.
The Wildcats' defense was flawless, committing zero errors while turning a key double play. Ryan Rosenthal anchored the defense with nine clean fielding plays.
Emmett Johnson, Archer Horn, and Wineinger each collected multiple hits for the Wildcats, who now improve to 15-8-2 on the season.
The rivals will meet again on Friday when St. Ignatius welcomes Saint Francis for the second game of the series.
