Delaney Powers St. Ignatius to Victory in Boras Classic Opener

SACRAMENTO, CA — April 14, 2025 — The St. Ignatius Wildcats opened their Boras Classic campaign with a convincing 3-0 victory over the San Marin Mustangs on Monday morning at Army Depot Park, riding the strong right arm of Finn Demuth and the clutch hitting of DJ Delaney to advance in the winner's bracket.

In what began as a classic pitcher's duel, both teams traded zeros until the Wildcats broke through in the bottom of the third inning. With two outs and the bases empty, Emmett Johnson worked a walk to keep the inning alive, setting the stage for Delaney's heroics. The Wildcats' slugger crushed a fastball deep to right-center field for a two-run homer, giving St. Ignatius a lead they would never relinquish.

The 'Cats added an insurance run in the fifth inning, again with two outs. Johnson singled through the left side of the infield and promptly stole second base to move into scoring position. Delaney came through once more, lining a single to center field to bring Johnson home and extend the lead to 3-0.

On the mound, Demuth was nothing short of dominant for St. Ignatius. The right-hander carved through the Mustangs' lineup over five shutout innings, recording 10 strikeouts while allowing just four hits. His command and poise kept San Marin hitters off balance throughout the contest.

Spencer Guido closed the door in relief, pitching the final two innings and striking out three Mustangs to preserve the shutout victory.

With the victory, St. Ignatius advances in the winner's bracket of the prestigious Boras Classic. The Wildcats face Benicia in their second game of the tournament, scheduled for 1:00 PM on Monday at Army Depot Park.

The Boras Classic, one of California's premier high school baseball tournaments, features many of the top programs from across the state and has become a showcase for college scouts and professional evaluators alike.
