SI Football Wins in San Diego
Defense Shines All Night & Seniors Hummel, Folk, and Hogan Get the Offense going in 2nd half.
The SI Football Team defense unit has been a very important part of the Wildcats preseason and on Friday night, their defensive play was simply marvelous! Cathedral Catholic scored a touchdown in the first quarter after an SI turnover, and the Dons didn't visit the end zone again until the last minute of the game. At halftime, Cathedral Catholic led 7-0 and Head Coach Lenny Vandermade's halftime talk was so inspirational, the 'Cats ran out of the locker room and back out to the field with 8:00 still left in halftime...and they didn't stop there! Cathedral Catholic had the ball start the 2nd half and then went on a series of 3-and-outs as the defensive line set the tone for the second half. Then, the Wildcats offense found their rhythm, and with a steady dose of RB
Jarious Hogan and two passing touchdowns from QB
Soren Hummel to WR Quin Folk, the Wildcats had a 16-7 lead late in the 4th quarter. SI ran the ball, Cathedral Catholic burned their timeouts, and after an SI punt, all SI needed was a stop to finish the game. However, Cathedral Catholic, the #2 ranked high school football team in San Diego, had some late game heroics in mind as the moved the ball up the field but couldn't stop the clock. After a nifty QB Keeper for a 30 yard touchdown to make the score 16-14, it was up to SI to gain possession of the onside kick, which bounced out-of-bounds. The Wildcats took victory formation and as the game ended, the team, and a fantastic showing by SI families and SoCal Alums, celebrated a hard-fount victory and improved their preseason record to 2-1.
Up next for the Wildcats is the WCAL Opener vs. Serra on September 27th @ St. Ignatius at 7:00 PM.
